Spike was one of 14 cats that were living in an enclosed horse barn. His stall was 12 X 12 and the walls were solid 4 ½ foot up. The only way Spike could see to the outside world was to get up on his hind legs and look out. It was obvious that his cell had not been cleaned for months as there was rotted food with bugs crawling all over it and mountains of feces covering all parts of the ground. Because the barn was enclosed there was no breeze to help cool the area.
When we first arrived the barn doors were kept closed making the temperature in the barn reach up to 120 degrees. We had been told the cats had been kept in there for at least 10 years. Not only was there no water for any of the cats to drink, Spike didn’t even have a container to put water into. Caring for Spike was a little more than challenging. Understandably he was very aggressive for both food and water.
On July 1, 2011, In-Sync Exotic was contacted to care for and place 20 cats located in Hunt Texas. What we discovered was absolutely heartbreaking. 14 cats were locked up in an enclosed barn while 6 were kept outside without any shelter at all. The condition these cats were living in was the worst we had ever seen and all of the cats’ desperately required medical care.
In-Sync took in eight animals—four lions (Aramis, Aurora, Layla and Eva) and five cougars (Spike, Kane, Howard, and Chloe). The remaining 12 cats were rehomed to other sanctuaries across the United States.
When we brought Spike home he had a very hard time adjusting to being outside. Almost every noise startled him. It took a couple of months to get Spike to feel comfortable in his new home. He still hasn’t learned how to jump onto a platform or walk a cat walk to get up high, but he does love laying in the sun and grass. Spike also knows now that food and water will always be there for him and looks forward to having his caregivers visit him.
We have no idea how old Spike is but we are hopeful that he will have a long happy life with us here at In-Sync.
